Root Canals

Root CanalsRoot canals are some of the most common dental procedures in the world. When you are suffering from severe tooth damage or decay, a root canal may be the best way to save your tooth. Although it may seem daunting, this procedure is straightforward and relatively painless.

At Elite Smiles Dental, we are committed to preserving your natural smile while providing a comfortable, stress-free dental experience.

How Can I Tell If I Need a Root Canal?

Root canals are used to save a tooth that is severely injured or decayed. Our doctors only recommend this treatment when they have exhausted all other options. Because root canals are used to fix serious dental problems, there are plenty of signs and symptoms to look for.

Common symptoms include:

· Tooth pain and sensitivity
· Throbbing or swelling in the mouth
· Gum pain, sensitivity, or discoloration
· Pus drainage in the mouth
· Swelling in the lymph nodes beneath the jaw
· An abscessed tooth

What Is the Procedure?

To begin treatment, our doctors and their skilled team will prepare the area. To do this, our doctors will apply an anesthetic around the injured tooth and gums. They will also place a “dental dam” in your mouth to keep the area free of saliva while they work.

After everything is ready, Our doctors will make a small opening in the tooth. They will remove any damaged or decayed tissue and shape the inside of your tooth for a filling. They will also clean and medicate the inside of the tooth to help prevent another infection.

To finish your procedure, our doctors will fill the tooth with a rubbery biocompatible substance. A permanent crown will then be placed over the tooth to strengthen it and protect it from further infection.

What Do I Do After a Root Canal?

After your root canal, continue to brush and floss regularly. To protect your new crown, avoid eating hard or sticky foods.

Unfortunately, it is sometimes possible for your tooth to become reinfected. Some discomfort is normal. However, if it does not go away, or if you experience severe pain in your tooth, call us immediately.
