Extractions

ExtractionsAt Elite Smiles Dental, we do everything in our power to save and preserve your natural teeth. Unfortunately, there are times when the only option left is to extract a tooth.

With modern technology and techniques, we can remove damaged, decayed, or problematic teeth with very little discomfort to our patients. We understand that the thought of tooth removal causes a great deal of anxiety in many of our patients. That is why at Elite Smiles Dental, we take every step to ensure your treatment is as comfortable, pain-free, and stress-free as possible.

Does My Tooth Need to Be Removed?

Extraction is our last resort. While we always do our best to preserve your natural teeth, it may be necessary to remove one or more teeth for the benefit of your overall oral health.

Situations where an extraction might be necessary include:

· Irreparable damage
· Excessive decay
· Overcrowding
· Widespread infection

If a tooth cannot be saved or repaired, our doctors may recommend removing it entirely. In this case, an extraction might be necessary if a patient is suffering from severe infection or decay.

Overcrowding is also a common dental problem that may result in an extraction. As an example, dentists regularly recommend removing wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth develop later in life than other adult teeth. These large back teeth can overcrowd your mouth and cause serious problems later in life.

Are Extractions Dangerous?

Typical tooth extractions are simple, straightforward procedures. Depending on the situation, your dentist will be able to remove a tooth using dental forceps. Our doctors will apply a local anesthetic and use their tools to gently rock the tooth back and forth until it is loose enough to pull. While you may feel some pressure during the procedure, the anesthetic will prevent you from feeling any discomfort or pain.

Occasionally a tooth may require surgery to remove. In this instance, our doctors will refer you to the most qualified oral surgeon available.

Mild discomfort is common after an extraction. Anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil should reduce swelling and help mitigate your pain. Limit your activity for at least 24 hours and eat only soft foods for a day or so after your procedure. Call us right away if you have any questions or concerns.
